April 1 - AV Club Misadventures
After getting off to a running start on my mundane responsibilities for the day, I decided to spend the afternoon brushing up on my video editing skills.
I've dabbled in Windows Movie Maker, but wanted to try something a little more robust, and settled on ShotCut - I think I settled on it after some inquiries on Reddit, but if it was recommended by someone around these parts, all apologies for not remembering to give a shout-out.
My old lady and I are both fans of B-movies, and I've been scraping most of what we stream for the last year - as a practical use case, I decided to work on my cutting-room chops by removing commercials from ripped streams of Svengoolie.
After installing the editor and viewing some tutorials, my noob-ass carelessly confirmed a prompt on my first project, nudging me to convert the opened file to a .MOV format... short of it, I destroyed my free space with a 100+ gb blob, couldn't delete with ordinary means or even the command prompt or powershell - I had to resort to FileShredder instead, crisis averted.
After learning I could edit .MP4s natively with the program, I didn't have any further hiccups, and we are now enjoying the finished result on our household Plex server. I will be adding links to these and other handy free software toys in the near future, in an effort to flesh out the remaining underdeveloped pages - be on the lookout.
